A deliberate mystery
The title page attributes the book to “Three Initiates,” but it names no individuals. The anonymity became part of the book’s aura and has encouraged more than a century of speculation.
The leading attribution
William Walker Atkinson is the name most often associated with the text because of stylistic parallels, subject matter, publishing connections, and his prolific work in New Thought. Other collaborators and candidates have also been proposed.
Responsible interpretation
Attribution should be presented as evidence-based probability rather than settled fact. The authorial mystery is historically interesting, but the text’s arguments can still be evaluated on their own terms.
